SAN ANTONIO -- A drugmaker is warning consumers not to buy the popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra after it learned it made a "false advertising" that could harm an older man.
The Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved Viagra, the generic name for the drug, to the U. S. market for more than a decade.
The drug maker, Pfizer, knew the drug had a serious side effect of sexual dysfunction, but it did not disclose it to the public until after its release.
Viagra, which has more than 30 million prescriptions in the U. S., has been linked to a number of side effects that have included erectile dysfunction, muscle pain, depression and sleep problems.
Pfizer knew the drug was linked to the death of an older man who died after taking the drug, but the company didn't release the details.
"Viagra is not a good drug and will not be taken by anyone who has diabetes or high blood pressure," said Lisa Gill, a spokeswoman for the FDA.
The company's statement said Viagra was the first approved drug in the United States to treat erectile dysfunction.
But the FDA has not yet approved a generic version of the drug, which is made by Merck.
"The FDA is not aware of the information we have received about Viagra," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the FDA's division of drug safety.
A Merck spokesman said the company did not comment on the FDA's release of the information.
The FDA said it does not know how many men taking Viagra are going to suffer from heart problems.
The FDA also issued a warning about a rare condition known as "heart disease." It is a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs.
Heart disease is a serious condition that affects people who have suffered from it for over 10 years, or more than 30 percent of them.
S., was developed by Pfizer and is now being marketed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer said it will continue to sell the drug until it loses patent protection.
The FDA approved Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction and to treat the condition for the duration of the drug's marketing campaign.
Pfizer said it had not received any warnings from the FDA about the condition.
The company said the warning about Viagra was not a direct threat to its marketing efforts and did not comment on the FDA's release.
Pfizer did not respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
